You are not alone.
As My Podcast Guy, I talk to podcasters who are struggling with podcast topics selection. Usually, the problem isn’t a lack of ideas. The problem is a lack of a filter.
When your podcast’s “why” is unclear, you either
- Chase whatever sounds interesting in the moment, or
- You try to cover absolutely everything.
As a result, your show loses its shape.
But when your podcast why is clear, it becomes the ultimate editor. It gives you a simple filter: Does this topic move my listener toward the promise I’ve made them?
If yes, it belongs.
If no, it goes on a different list.
The “Grab Bag” Podcast Feed
Let me share a composite story of a client I’ll call Elise.
Elise had plenty of expertise and a massive list of ideas: tips, interviews, rants, book reviews, live coaching—you name it. Every time she listened to another podcast, she’d think, “Oh, I should do an episode on that too.”
The result?
She was overwhelmed, and her feed looked like a grab bag. One week was a technical how-to; the next was a vulnerable personal story; the next was an industry news breakdown. None of the episodes were bad, but there was no clear thread tying them together.
When we sat down, we went back to her show promise: To help [specific audience] stop feeling stuck and start taking realistic action.
Then, we held her massive list of ideas up to that promise and asked: “Which of these actually move your listener closer to that goal?”
Suddenly, the clutter cleared.
Episodes designed to impress her peers? Crossed off.
Trendy industry news that didn’t help her listeners get unstuck? Moved to a “maybe later” list.
Instead of a chaotic episode idea notes, she found three clear “lanes” for her topics: mindset shifts, simple frameworks, and real-world success stories.
The 3-Step Podcast Topics Filter Exercise
You don’t need to be a stressed-out content machine. You just need to run your messy list of ideas through your podcast why.
Here is a simple, 3-step process you can do today:
- Step 1: Write down your 1-2 sentence podcast why and your show promise. Keep it right in front of you.
- Step 2: Brain dump your ideas. List 10 to 20 episode ideas you’ve been bouncing around. Don’t edit them yet—just get the working titles, guest names, or loose concepts onto the paper.
- Step 3: Ask the ultimate filter question. Go down the list. For every single idea, ask yourself:
“If this episode goes out, exactly how does it move my listener closer to the promise I’ve made them?”
Now, mark them:
- ✔ (Checkmark): Clearly supports the promise. Let’s make it.
- ? (Question Mark): Possibly fits, but needs an angle adjustment.
- X (Cross): Doesn’t serve the promise right now.
You aren’t throwing the “X” ideas away forever; you are simply acknowledging they don’t belong in the front row of your content plan.
What to Do Next
Look at your list of checkmarks. Pick a cluster of 3 or 4 topics that fit well together.
Congratulations!
You just planned an entire month of highly focused, deeply aligned podcast content that your listeners will actually care about. Every topic earned its place by serving your mission, not just by sounding interesting.
